J League official: in 2024, the J1 League will be expanded to 20 teams, with a rule of 3 up and 3 down.

According to previous reports, the number of teams participating in the J League will be adjusted from the 2024 season, the number of teams participating in the J1 League will be expanded from 18 to 20, and the teams participating in the J2 and J3 League will also be adjusted to 20. A total of 60 teams will participate in the J1, J2 and J3 leagues.
The J League official website today announced the promotion and relegation rules of the J1, J2 and J3 leagues for the next two seasons:
J1 League 2022-2024 season promotion and relegation rules
2022 season: 18 teams and 2.5 relegation places (the last two in the league will be automatically relegated to the J2 league, and the penultimate winner will have a play-off with the 3-6 winners of the J2 league promotion play-off, and the winner will stay in the J1 league)
2023 season: 18 participating teams, 1 relegation quota, the last place in the league was relegated to the J2 league
2024 season: 20 teams participated, 3 were relegated, and the last three in the league were relegated to the J2 league.
J2 League 2022-2024 season promotion and relegation rules
2022 season: 22 teams participated in the tournament, with a promotion quota of 2.5 (the top two places in the league were promoted to the J1 league, and the third to sixth place in the league first decided the winner through the promotion play-off, then played with the penultimate third of the J1 league, and the winner was promoted to the J1 league); the last two places in the league were dropped to the J3 league
2023 season: 22 teams participated in the tournament, with 3 places for promotion (the top two places in the league were promoted to the J1 league, the third to sixth places in the league were decided through the promotion play-off, and the winner was promoted to the J1 league); the last two places in the league were dropped to the J3 league
2024 season: 20 teams participated in the tournament, with 3 places for promotion (the top two places in the league were promoted to the J1 league, the third to sixth places in the league were decided through the promotion play-off, and the winner was promoted to the J1 league); the last three places in the league were dropped to the J3 league
J3 League 2022-2024 season promotion and relegation rules
2022 season: 18 teams and 2 promotion places (the top two in the league are promoted to the J2 league)
2023 season: 20 participating teams (J3 League will be expanded to 20 teams in the new season due to the participation of JFL teams Nara Club and Osaka FC), and 2 places will be upgraded (the top two of the league will be promoted to J2 league)
2024 season: 20 participating teams, 3 promotion places (the top two in the league are promoted to the J2 league, the 3rd-6th place in the league is decided by the promotion play-off, and the winner is promoted to the J2 league).
